Journalist Encounter: Kimble Earle, Editor of Independent Schools Magazine; Founder & Director of WhereCanWeGo.com

At Sublime PR, we've had the pleasure of working with Kimble Earle at Independent Schools Magazine for a few years now.  Kimble appreciates our well-thought through pitches for interesting and relevant article topics and the fact that we always deliver on our promises, without fail.  We have a great success rate of placing editorial in the magazine.  We caught up with him admist his busy day job, to ask him a few questions.  Read his interview below

:

What is your professional job title?

Editor and Proprietor of Independent Schools Magazine; Founder and Director of WhereCanWe Go. com.

What magazines/blogs do you write for?

Independent Schools Magazine.

What is your Pet PR peeve?

PR people who promise to get back with information by a certain date, don't do so, and then seem surprised when I chase up.

How do you prefer to be contacted by companies and PRs?

Email or telephone.

How many emails and/or phone calls do you receive from PRs per day?

Around twenty.

What is the best & worst thing about social media?

Best for reaching out to large numbers of people; worst is never really being sure whether you're going to get the response you seek because social media users generally  have such a short attention-span.

What newspapers/magazines do you read?

Daily and Sunday Telegraph plus various magazines.

Are you a regular tweeter and can PRs contact you via Twitter?

No.

What makes a good story in your opinion?

Something which is newsy - i.e. contains fresh tidings of some kind, and definitely not puff material of no news value.

What is your top tip for businesses/PRs wanting to get coverage in your publication?

Read our magazine and angle your item to our readership; do not send the same material everywhere.

What topical story is really grabbing your attention at the moment?

The increasing incidence of mental health problems amongst young people.

How important are good images and videos?

A compelling image can make the difference between an item being thrown in the bin after a quick glance or taking the trouble to consider how it can be used.

What are your top three passions in life?

Apart from family life - i) A hatred for the word passion, now so over-used as to be meaningless. ii) The British countryside iii) Travel

How would you describe your impression/experience of working with Natalie at Sublime PR?

She delivers, full stop.

The power of vertical video

Instagram has been making headlines again this last week, and not just because there are now over 400 million people using it, but because it has been making some changes in functionality with the rise of vertical video.  It's all good news for us PR folk though, and of course for businesses of all shapes and sizes.  We are loving the concept of vertical video right now at Sublime, because not only do you get to dominate your target audiences complete phone screen with your lovely products and services but this also opens up a new creative territory for PR - as many of us will recall, Snapchat and Periscope have already paved the way in vertical video with some reall success so it will be interesting to watch this 'vertical' space in the future.

A picture says a thousand words

  • Published in PR

When we read articles in magazines, newspapers and online, the thing that draws us in is usually the visual.  An exciting, captivating image can hook us into reading a story we might otherwise have ignored.  Journalists know this little fact.  This is why a great image is so vitally important to securing great press coverage, in fact, it can be the make of break of a story in most cases.  No picture? No story.  Sounds a bit obvious but you'd be amazed at how many journalists we speak to who say that they still receive so many news stories without images.

A lovely example of the importance of a good image is a recent piece of coverage we secured for one of our clients in the Scottish Daily Mail where the images made the story.  In fact it was almost a page in length because of the images we were able to offer (I mean, take a look at this, they are truly amazing!) Being available to source last minute content for the paper on a Sunday evening also helped (Sublime PR - never off duty!) Get snapping...

Journalist Encounter - Alison Potter, Staff Writer at Prima Baby & Junior Magazine

At Sublime PR we pride ourselves on the relationships we have with journalists, Prima Baby & Pregnancy is no exception.  We've been dealing with Alison Potter for some time now on some fab and interesting stories and features for the parenting audience.  Of course, for us it is all about the story and journalists value us for this.  Alison was kind enough to give us a few pearls and tips for secureing PR coverage in the magazine...

What is your professional job title?

Staff writer at Prima Baby

What magazines/blogs do you write for?

Currently Prima Baby and Juniormagazine.co.uk

What is your Pet PR peeve?

When someone you're not on familiar terms with doesn't use your forename when emailing you. I think that's the height of rudeness! If it's a press release  send out then that's ok, but for personal emails I don't think it's too much of a stretch to write someone's name.

How do you prefer to be contacted by companies and PRs?

By email – that way you can see the visual side and read the factual info at the same time. On the phone you have no idea how something looks, which does make a big difference!

How many emails and/or phone calls do you receive from PRs per day?

Around 100-150 emails. 20+ calls

What is the best & worst thing about social media?

You have a direct line to what people think and can communicate with readers in a way that wasn't possible before, which I love. Unfortunately though there are a lot of social media trolls out there, which is definitely the worst thing about social media!

What newspapers/magazines do you read?

The Times, The Telegraph, Metro, The Sun, The Guardian, The Mirror, Vice, Lainey Gossip, Empire Magazine, Elle, Oh Comely Magazine, The Debrief. I read a lot!

Are you a regular tweeter and can PRs contact you via Twitter?

Fairly regularly and yes PRs can definitely contact me via Twitter!

What makes a good story in your opinion?

Anything that piques curiosity or interest – after all isn't that why we read it in the first place?

What is your top tip for businesses/PRs wanting to get coverage in your publication?

Pitch wisely  know audience of the publication and also have a rough idea where you think it would sit well in the publication. Ican't tell you how many dating websites contact me looking for coverage but there's not much scope for them to be featured in a pregnancy and baby magazine!

What topical story is really grabbing your attention at the moment?

The discussions about monitoring people's online activity  both in terms of national security and in terms of cookies and how things are now advertised to us based on our what we've been looking at online. It fascinates me.

How important are good images and videos?

Essential. The whole package is important  you wouldn't write an article with half the facts so why would you feature something terribly photographed or filmed? I get so sad when a great story or article is let down by awful images.

What are your top 3 passions in life?

Learning, reading, experiencing  sorry if that's vague but that's the most apt way of putting it! I basically like trying new things and going on adventures.

How would you describe your impression/experience of working with Natalie at Sublime PR?

Natalie is efficient, smart and very easy to work with. She understands that journalists are often under a ton of pressure with tight deadlines and accordingly is incredibly helpful – it's great when someone knows and understands the industry!
